Psychological therapy aims to help individuals overcome a range of psychosocial difficulties including emotional, behavioural, and interpersonal problems. At Recognise, we support the implementation of evidenced based approaches, which means you can feel comfortable in the fact that the strategies and interventions you receive, are highly effective and supported by a wealth of research.

Some evidenced based psychological interventions include: Psychoeducation, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Therapy, Schema-focused therapy, Imaginal & Graded Exposure, Solution-focused Brief Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy.

A large majority of Evidenced Based therapies are considered short to medium term, so might also be considered as cost effective.

Evidenced Based approaches are used in psychology to treat a range of problems such as: Anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, trauma, anger and chronic pain.
The goal of the initial consultation is to gain as much information as we can about your history, intensity, and frequency of your symptoms. We also look at how these (& other) issues might be impacting on your daily functioning, and work with you to devise a treatment plan with a focus on helping you achieve your goals. Pre-screening of symptoms also takes place at your initial session so we can track and review your progress throughout the treatment process. Initial sessions can range from 1 to 1.5 hours. Subsequent sessions are typically one hour in duration.
All of the information disclosed throughout your sessions is kept confidential and your privacy is of the utmost importance. Your information is not disclosed to any third party without your prior consent to do so.

The only time a psychologist is required to disclose information is when it is requested by law, or if we have reason to believe that you, or someone else, may be at risk of harm. Please note however, that we do endeavour to discuss these issues(where feasible) with you, so that you have an opportunity to clarify any concerns you may have regarding these kinds of issues, prior to disclosing this information to legal or government authorities.
Psychological treatment can be provided to individuals through a range of services. For instance, some individuals may obtain a referral through their Employee Assistance Program, whilst others may obtain a referral from their GP as part of the 'Better assess to Mental Health' scheme. In the latter case Medicare are able to provide a rebate so that you are subsidised for yours sessions however, your General Practitioner, Psychiatrist, or Paediatrician will need to assess whether you meet the criteria first, in order to allow access to services under this initiative. Part of the criteria is that you meet diagnosis for a mental health condition.

A particular consultation between you and your doctor is required to make this assessment, and to create the necessary referral documentation for us.

Medicare rebates (as at 2014) are between $84 and $122 per session and you may be eligible for up to 10 sessions per calendar. An additional 80% of the gap may also be rebated if families reach their Medicare Safety Net.
This typically depends on the practitioner you are seeing and what psychological difficulty you are seeing them for however, most sessions tend to be 1 hour in duration.
A cancellation fee may be charged if you give less than 24 hours notice. Whilst we understand that life can be busy, we encourage you to notify us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend. This allows those who may be on a wait list to access us earlier.
EFTPOS facilities are available. Many private health funds provide rebates for psychological consultations. Please check with your fund to find out about your eligibility. Medicare Rebates (where applicable) can also be reimbursed on premises.

Given that the pace of life is continuing to increase at a rapid rate, and that we are all trying to cram more into our everyday lives, it is perhaps not surprising that more and more people are finding it exceedingly difficult to juggle their various work, family, social, and personal commitments.

Research completed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing: 2009) suggests that one in five Australians will suffer from psychological disorder during their lifetime.

The great majority of clients we see are everyday ordinary human beings who have suffered a negative, unexpected, difficult, or unfamiliar experience, who are looking to find some helpful strategies to assist them in managing their stressors and/or symptoms.

Some of the psychosocial problems that clients might experience difficulties with include: relationships, living situations, work changes, job loss, family discord, or bereavement. We can offer assistance to individuals who are going through major transitions in their life such as parenting, marriage, divorce, separation, dealing with medical conditions, and retirement.

We also provide treatment to individuals who suffer from more specific psychological symptoms related to anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, anger, or chronic pain.

So whether you are suffering from a problem that is big or small, we are likely to have some strategies that will assist you to create more resilience, stability, certainty, and direction in your life.
